Comment on So Why am I Dressed Up Today Even Though I Work from Home? by Susan

As a fellow freelancer working from home I'm always interested to read what others in my shoes (or slippers as the case may be) do to up their motivation when the going gets slow.

I'm always trying new ways to shake things up and be more productive and here's one that helped me recently: Identify one thing that's stopping you from doing more work. For me, it was not having clips in a email ready and available form. I'm comfortable with the publications I write for but would like to branch out. Many times I'd get an idea but what would stop me is having my clips in the magazine, not on my computer where I could easily attach one to send with the story idea. Finally, I spent one whole work day scanning my clips in PDF format and putting them in a file on the computer. Now I find I'm sending out many more ideas than I was and feeling way more productive. So whatever it is that's stopping you from moving forward in your work from home mode, try to zero in and eradicate it!

I'd love to hear what other ways work at homers have found to up their productivity and motivation.

It's not that I hope he gets arrested but he should be if the police can make a case. And he should lose his endorsements! I heard Speedo has stuck with him (for now). Unfortunately, I don't think these athletes see themselves as the role models that they really are. Phelps certainly can't appreciate the gravity of his actions and the message it sends to the world because he's too young and has been 'training' too long to have had enough life experience.

And if someone comes out to say, 'he's young, young men don't have impulse control', I'm going to smack them. If he was able to train long and hard enough to accomplish what he's accomplished, then he has focus and he knew better! I'm so disappointed in him.

Hi Jack,
Your email gave me a little bit of a start this morning--my deceased father-in-law was Jack McCue--a native New Yorker who was, in his own way, quite the philosopher himself! And, my husband has an Aunt Joan McCue (and an Aunt Joan O'Connor--as a child I never met other "Joans.")

By all means, feel free to comment away--I welcome intelligent dialog.

Happy New Year!

Good evening Joan. I could not miss the opportunity to say hello to a Joan McCue. I have been married to a Joan McCue for 55 years and I loved every moment of it. She was born and raised in San Francsco in a family that was there before 1865.
I loved reading your opservations and I would love to discuss them with you, but, I seriously ruined my brain by spending many years studying philosophy. The only thing I learned was how to use language to demostrate that any opservation or conclusion was wrong. Even the history of science is one claiming, "what we used to think is wrong."
There are 25 of our Christian Bibles, each with years of intellectual battles as to what should be in the Bible and mistranslation through the many languages. The Koran has so many interpertations that it is only fun to see the way the belief lays itself out.
Love to you and your family
Jack
PS: Our McCue came from Ireland about 1854 to his uncle in Wisconsin

Thanks for posting this - I LOVE these kind of stories and it was cool to find out that there are real women who inspried the songs behind some of the now famous names (like Sharona, Rikki and Rosalita. I already knew about Judy).

Gosh was it that long ago?? I heard it in the pouring rain at the Stadium-must've been that year 'cus he didn't do it when I saw him in the arena for the Magic Tour. That night in the stadium, the encore was Jersey Girl, Born to Run, and Thunder Road. To quote Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman: "I nearly peed my pants!"

Joanie - you would have had to grow up in NJ for starters...And ya know I heard Rosalita on the radio this morning (WPLJ!). I was lucky enough to hear him play it live at a concert in 2003 at Giants Stadium - he doesn't play it very often!

Great article!! Thanks for sharing!
