I agree with your comment about parents and teachers being afraid of each other. I remember being so surprised when my oldest was in kindergarten and the principal told us parents that many teachers are intimidated by parents, when we had been feeling the same way. It's so important for both sides to remember that in the end, we share a common goal--to do the best for the kids.

Dear Joan, I really appreciated your description of the moderation efforts of your school. Parent-Teacher relationships are tricky, and the sad part is that effective parent-teacher communication only happens when both parents and teachers stop being afraid of each other! I, too, have experienced run-ins with parents, especially when I first began teaching. However, I am happy to say that building communication lines at the beginning of the school year and giving out positive feedback as well as negative feedback has made my relationships with parents thrive. At my Christian private school, however, I'm sure the problem areas are significantly different than at a local public school. I would like to invite you to my new blog site, Christian Teacher Forum at Wordpress since your comments on education and goals as a mom were so thoughtful and insightful. We would appreciate having you aboard as a resource! :-)

I'm Christian (of the liberal sort) but not Catholic. I think whatever holy Saturday is, is unique to Catholicism so I have no idea what one should do. We non-Catholics eat whatever we want whenever we want, so as far as I know Good Friday is just another TGIF to the rest of us. And that whole giving something up for Lent? Thank goodness I don't do that either, I'd no doubt cheat, whatever it was. Hope you have a great Easter!

Thanks, Mada. I opted for iTunes gift cards this year, and a box of real chocolates (Whitman's sampler--yum!)for the family to share that I know will get eaten. Isn't it funny what gifts endure from childhood?

If you're looking at an 11th hour thing again this year, here's a thought. Years later, I have no clue what kind of candy my mom put in our baskets. I do know that there wasn't much in the way of candy. What I DO remember is that she always selected a non-candy gift for each of us. Years later, I still remember a few of those, the highlight being a long Betty Boop sweatshirt with glitter writing on it. Also, the grass was in our baskets until that morning, then we were allowed to keep our baskets but the grass had to get picked up and put in a baggie so it wouldn't wind up everywhere.

Interesting. When is it OK to stop being your word? I think in legal speak once once side has broken their side of the contract then it's over. The other side is no longer bound to uphold theirs. And I think most people would agree with you that this principle applies in other non-legally binding cases.

I wonder though, if this is a fundamental cause of why the world works the way it does (my own judgment here). I wonder if the real measure of a person is that they continue to honor who they said they are, their own personal code of ethics even in the face of everyone else around them breaking their word.

Who knows what Mrs. Spitzer's motivation was. It could just as easily have been honorable as not. I'm certainly not qualified to say.

Ok, you know me, and my grammar is not up to your standard. But I post a comment anyway and I guess that says that I also am willing to "cross the line" in my own way. Not everyone is equally gifted and that's how life is supposed to be, or at least is. I accept it and it works as long as people can express themselves to the best of their abilities.

Congratulations on your new blog.
